Studies of culture contact and change in the face of European expansion to the Americas has attracted the attention of scholars from diverse disciplines for more than a century. Various theories and methods have been developed and applied to historical problems in the attempt to understand the nature and scale of cultural, economic and political processes that transformed both colonial and indigenous societies. Operationalizing these models in archaeology has been a challenge, as many studies, with notable exceptions, tend to be descriptive, in the best of cases, and deficient, in the worst. The difficulties are many including, for example, the value and (mis) application of accultu ration models and world systems theories, the location of the spheres or places of contact, the relation and use of artifact, written and oral data and the materiality of cultures undergoing abrupt change. This symposium plans to bring together scholars representing a diverse range of positions and experience to discuss the archaeology of contact, ideally instigating the exchange of ideas that will serve to subsidize and strengthen this research area.
