Between Nunavut and Tierra del Fuego contemporary Amerindian groups live in a broad range of contexts from voluntary isolation to urban environments. They are marginalized citizens, form successful political movements, hold positions of power and are subjects of circulating imaginations. This workshop focuses on the ambiguous field of indigenous modernities and the anthropological uses of the term indigenous modernity. Contributions will present and debate existing concepts and their empirical and theoretical applications.

If indigenous modernity is in itself plural, which underlying and common dimensions and central differences may be identified? Which alternative understandings of contemporary Amerindian life and circulating imaginations may be gained through such concepts? Which theoretical and empirical strenghts and weaknesses of such a concept may be identified? How will it impact on and transform our understanding of (post- or late) modernity? Is indigenous modernity just another variant of multiple and or alternative modernities? Is it the outcome of an “indigenization of modernity” (Sahlins)?

This workshop invites scholars to analyze the field of indigenous modernities by focusing on ethnographic case studies, historical and comparative analysis and/or theoretical reflections.
