Ancient Guerrero is known for its lapidary tradition, which is characterized by the production of small polished and abstract-styled stone objects, among which figure masks and figurines. It has been suggested that the production of masks in Teotihuacan was related with this long-lived lapidary tradition, because of the similarities in techniques and style, and the newness of the production in Teotihuacan. This question will be explored through a comparative study of the polished-stone industry in Teotihuacan and Guerrero during the Classic Period, with special attention given to the techniques, styles, and forms.
