9026 - Importance of the family for adult returning to the school

In children educations is widely known the importance of the family for the educational success. By other hand the adult education and motivation for adults return to the school and school processes is a theoretical desert. We used the Pierre Bourdieu political/sociological methodology for understand motivation for mentioned subject as alternative to the usual motivational theories read by us as a very flat concept, with a very comprehensive results.

Portugal had the World biggest experience for adult return to educational processes involving 1,5 million persons from the 5,5 total active population during the period from 2006 to 2011. Analyzing data from four independent samples in a total of 8.000 persons, each one interviewed by phone, during half hour, with double random extraction, we could determine that two main beams of factors explain the large majority of the decision making: labor related issues and family dynamics.  

In the proposed presentation we analyze only the family importance for adult adoption of a new relation with educational processes, in order to return to educational improvements. It was found that the expectations and opinions of spouses and son’s works to the candidate as a very important driver.   Another relevant dimension is what we can nominate as “virtuous circle” where when one of the family member initiate a return to school, appears the probability of around 20% the spouse return too for the same process.  

As the last point we note the huge importance of the self-image inside the family, the improvement of Self referential issues for the decision making into adoption of a LLL approach.  

This Portuguese experience could be very relevant for educational public policies at many of the Latin Countries where significant part of the active population don’t finish the upper secondary school, the minimum level for achieve a real citizenship.
