The symposium “History and communication: media, intellectuals and political participation” aims to build a multidisciplinary forum assembling researchers concerned with the "media" as a subject - historians, social scientists, journalists, writers, etc. The media is considered not simply a source of analysis, but mainly a key to research and study. At this symposium, research papers about the power relationship inside this "universe of collaboration" – newsrooms of newspaper’s offices, radio and television stations, etc. – and its exchanges with civil society and the government sphere will be especially welcome. This symposium belongs to the area “history of the present” and it has topics such as the intellectual work and the question of ethics. It focuses on the activities of a specialist – the intellectual/journalist – and the rules to be followed by him/her, particularly the moment he/she breaks these rules. Thus, subjects like the route of newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, clusters of information, etc., as well as its journalists’, are some issues to be considered. Moreover, theoretical reflexions and/or analysis of historical processes are both important and required. The symposium will comprise important issues such as: access to information and censorship; perception of the press as private companies selling a kind of “public utility”; role of intellectuals [journalists/news’ workmen], engaged in left-wing politics or at the service of the State [Earthly authority, according to Gramsci], their political routes and involvement; constitution of the public sphere and role of the press versus the Brazilian republican process of citizenship. The networks and rules of sociability within the groups of journalists/scholars are also the key for understanding the values and proposals constituted in such communities and their adjustments to the political scenario of the 20th Century in Brazil. Journalism is considered the scenario where the social rules are played, the supposed surveillance of power is performed and the issue of freedom of expression is called into question. Thus this symposium will examine analytical works on the history of the present, as well as the relationship between the historian and/or the social scientist, the so called “person responsible” for the making of this “History”.
