9153 - Cinemateca del Tercer Mundo: a First Step Towards a Uruguayan Cinema.

This paper explores Latin American filmmaking during the 60s and beginning of the 70s through the case of Uruguay. This small nation, which cinema was struggling to be born, finds in the movements associated with New Latin American Cinema and Third Cinema a first impulse to generate a cinema of its own. Accompanying the belief that Latin America (together with other Third World nations) had to have a cinema that reflected their own realities, a group of Uruguayan filmmakers embarked on a project which provided a series of images of utmost importance to understand that historical period. La Cinemateca del Tercer Mundo was one of several organisations created by Latin American filmmakers of the region to promote and preserve Latin American productions. However, it was also essential in the development of Uruguayan cinema. Instead of being a movement against an official cinema that did not exist, this group of filmmakers was effectively promoting the birth of a national cinema within a regional project.

In this presentation, I will therefore explore the relationship between cinema and politics, the role of cinema in key historical moments, and the ways of production and exhibition in the context of this small Latin American nation. The regional interactions and theoretical frameworks developed to study neighbour cinemas will contribute to this analysis.
