3541 - The development of citizenship and deliberative practices in the Mexican public sphere

This paper argues that the development of deliberative practices through the Mexican media and other spaces of the Mexican public sphere will encourage the development of citizenship and political participation of Mexicans. Despite enjoying more freedom, plurality and competition nowadays, the Mexican media need to enhance their information culture and develop more deliberative practices in order to encourage the political participation of Mexican citizens. This paper argues that the Mexican media could become the cornerstone in order to develop conscious and mature citizens who could push for the further democratic transition of their country, and other spaces of the Mexican public sphere could also contribute to this outcome.
