542 - Interest and Affect: Negotiating Intimacy and Economy in the Americas

The twin ideals of love as free of material interest and business as free from personal feelings are strong in many parts of the world and very much so in what we often refer to as “the West”. Within social sciences it is translated in the view of intimacy and economy as “separate spheres and hostile worlds” (Zelizer 2005). On the one hand monetarization is, for example, often seen as leading to a breakdown of the moral economy of sharing and solidarity. On the other hand intimacy is seen as corrupting economic and political life via, for example, nepotism.  

In this panel we welcome papers challenging the alluring simplicity of this view by dealing with how people negotiate intimacy and economy in the everyday. Is the view of “separate spheres and hostile worlds” even present in the ethnographic context? And even if it is, how is it reasserted, transcended, reconfigured, stretched, blurred, silenced?  

Possible contributions could for example explore ideals and practices surrounding: the sending and/or receiving of remittances; friendship, sharing and hospitality; relations between tourists and “locals”; household economies and family life; courtship and couplehood; family business and household production; affective and caring labour; material culture; social networks and the informal economy, etc.  

Though placed in the thematic area of Social and Cultural Anthropology the theme is well suited to presenters from all disciplines: sociology, economy, law, psychology, gender studies, political sciences, history, etc. We welcome papers dealing with the whole continent of America: South, Central and North.
