4120 - Personhood, power and heritage in Afro-Brazilian Candomble

This paper will explore the process of transformation of some houses of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé into cultural heritage and museums, and how it has affected its practice. On the one hand heritage politics have reinforced notions of tradition and ancestrality, but on the other hand it has also generated some contradictions by making public and visible objects, practices and rituals that traditionally have been secret and hidden. This paper will explore these contradictions in particular through the production and use of images of heritage by Candomblé practitioners.
