7576 - Almodóvar, El Deseo and the Co-Production of Latin-American Cinematic Space

Since the year 2000, Pedro Almodóvar’s production company, El Deseo, has co-produced six films by Latin-American directors that represent significant engagements with important filmmakers from the region. Yet they appear to fall into the familiar neocolonial artistic mold in which Latin American talent and resources are exploited for the Spanish producer’s financial benefit. El Deseo’s collaborations, however, suggest that the traditional asymmetries of power have been displaced by the emergence of what Néstor García Canclini calls “a shared cultural patrimony and transnationalization of economy and of symbols that underscore the status of individuals as simultaneously members of national populations but also of transnational and intercultural communities as well” (Consumidores y ciudadanos,1995 184).

In their composite, these films mobilize elements of a common transnational artistic repertory that addresses a deterritorialized Hispanic spectatorship, most notably in social space as figured by an intermedial cinematic mise en scène. This paper considers three exemplary Latin-American films co-produced by El Deseo that share a common treatment of spatialized stagings of what Canclini describes as the narratives of postmodern Hispanic identity: Paul Leduc’s El cobrador (2006); Lucrecia Martel’s La mujer sin cabeza (2008) and Julia Solomonoff’s El último verano de la Boyita ( 2010).
