11899 - "I put a spell on you¿: Performing the African Body"

This contribution critically highlights the politics of self-representation of African artists in the public space, be it on stage or in the streets, and the process of reclaiming ones’ own ‘body’ from the reputed, ascribed categories of ‘the master’. Or to put it differently: why Screamin’ Jay Hawkins is a master of postcolonial diasporic strategies and what this has got to do with prisons and street riots.

Keywords: black experience, body, embodiment
