9156 - Localizing global environmental discourses in indigenous communities in Mexico

This paper explores the impact of globalised discourses on environmental protection on indigenous communities in Oaxaca, Mexico. The focus lies on the ways these discourses affect gender relations and internal hierarchies. I seek to explore how environmental discourses are used by women and men to gain access to economic and political resources. These processes are situated in wider contexts and economic frameworks, in particular tourism and new forms of self-representations. I investigate these issues by applying a political economy approach.
