11678 - Future energy system of Latin American Cities - the example of Santiago de Chile

Modern cities are highly dependent from the continuous availability of affordable energy. This makes them vulnerable to energy shortages. Due to different reasons climate change regarding temperature, precipitation etc., heat effects on fossil power plants, higher prizes of fossil energy resources, increasing numbers of electric vehicles, decentralisation of energy supply, increasing renewable energy production) the structure and the amount of urban energy demand and supply will change dramatically in the next years. These changes are closely linked with land use changes and will become an important topic for urban planning. The presentation will show visions of future sustainable energy systems by 2030 and 2050 for Santiago de Chile with links to other cities in Latin America.
