Humans think in metaphor and art is a metaphoric language. One function of art is to knock us off balance - to ask REAL questions, not fake questions. Real questions are questions to which we have no clear answers. Why is this essential? Because acknowledging we do not have the answers, and meaning it, opens up creative space in which we do not need to agree. How can we be in a real dialogue if we need to agree?

This theatre workshop will ask participants to investigate the struggles they experience in their own lives and work, the blockages to being in true, meaningful dialogue. Over the three days we will play “seeing”, “listening” and “touching” games that are based in the work of Brazilian founder of the Theatre of the Oppressed, Augusto Boal. We will use these to build trust and a common language inside the workshop group. Then we will speak the language of theatre to investigate ways to break through blockages and into dialogue, in ways that do not polarize characters into "us" and "them" / oppressors and oppressed.

Participants do not need any experience in the theatre. What is required is a willingness to be open and a desire to play, while investigating an issue that is central to humanity. It is possible that some of the content from this workshop will be used in the Keynote address on July 20. For this reason, attending the workshop each day and the keynote is also required. This is not a “drop in and out” event, as each day’s work leads to the next.
