In 1994 Néstor García Canclini posed the question: Will There Be a Latin American Cinema in the Year 2000? Given the fact that new patterns of film production and consumption have emerged in the 1990s, namely, co-productions, production and distribution by foreign companies and the casting of foreign actors, which trends and factors influenced contemporary Latin American cinema? This panel proposes to investigate the ways in which the cinemas of Latin America have reinvented themselves in the first decade of the new millennium by establishing dialogs with domestic and international audiences, national and international cinematic traditions and producers. We are especially interested in presentations that explore: • co-production and transnational funding • casting of foreigner (European) stars in Latin American cinema • casting of Latin American actors in foreign cinema (American, European)--> omit • Latin American films in Film festivals • national and international films that have influenced Latin American films post-2000 • popular narratives in Latin American cinema • Latin American films that have transcended national borders * National identity in a transnational age * the use of popular genres * documentaries
Palabras claves: Latin America cinemas, globalization, neo-liberalism, transnational productions
