Processes of globalisation are closely linked to perception and strategies of representation. The transnational interspaces that have arisen through the movements of actors in the course of globalisation are symbolically, cognitively, medially and aesthetically mediated through oral, written and visual signs. Our symposium will present this mediation from the perspective of cultural studies, including anthropological, historiographic and literary critical methods.

Cartographic representations are regarded as acts of symbolic appropriation. Part of the “mental mapping” of transnational spaces is in turn the spatial construction of hemispheres, as, for example, not only “Indo-America”, the “Americas” and the “Black Atlantic”, but also concretely formalised spaces such as the “North American Free Trade Area” (NAFTA) or economically produced spaces such as the “dollar zone”. Various concepts of space are superimposed upon the spatial constructions of nation-state territoriality and sovereignty. Here spatial metaphors come into play that are based on specific processes of communication and identification.

Parallel to nation-building, “pan-” movements gained in importance in the second half of the nineteenth century. The contemporary re-invention of the spatial concept of “Abya Yala” or the rediscovery of “Indo-America” to refer to an indigenous understanding of America are related to the rediscovery of these pan- movements. The invocation of a mythic space of “Bolivarianism” by the Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez is also to be understood in this context. Another complex of themes in which spaces of representation are to be brought to bear in an historical perspective is that of places of remembrance.

Particularly relevant to forms of representation is the medial aspect of those cultural productions which combine various conceptualisations of spaces and movements. “Space” here is conceived of in the form of global communication networks, and it is necessary to enquire into this kind of mediation and the transformation of certain spatial images in the media. In cultural studies, questions of cultural representation (for example, fictionalisations and aestheticisations) of spaces in literature, art and other cultural productions are central. Cultural studies therefore provide important starting points for the understanding of spatial metaphors and their feedback with territoriality, imagination and re-territorialisation, which are constantly projecting new images of the territorial.
This symposium would like to present areas of work and the results of the research network "Entre Espacios", which is closely connected with an international research training group and committed to globalisation studies from the Latin American perspective.
