5707 - Indigenous right for consultation and the agenda for inclusive development

Indigenous peoples have been historically excluded from development. Their lands, territories and natural resources are exploited or taken over under the guise of development. Recently, the right for consultation has been in the process of legislation (May 2011) in order to integrate indigenous point of view. In this presentation, I argue that the making of an inclusive agenda for development requires the input of an indigenous political culture expressed in the creation of organizations of indigenous peoples themselves. Such organizations have denounced and monitored cases of conflict related to the defense and protection of natural resources as well as activities related to development carried out without consultation.
