The symposium discusses the architecture of Latin American cities and their historical centers as cultural artifacts. Centers contribute in various ways to cultural activity in the cities. First, the centers act as physical settings hosting museums, cultural centers, theaters for performing arts, and as an indoor or outdoor stage for shows. Second, their public or semi-public spaces constitute a centrality, translated into dynamic spaces of exchanges and meetings, attracting residents and visitors to fairs, markets, leisure, and popular cultural manifestations. The current performing movement "flash mob" demonstrates the importance of central areas for meetings that take place in streets, squares, or in public buildings such as railway or subway stations. Third, the city center can be seen as a place of historic or traditional architectural value, and as the result of multiple historical layers, preserves the urban memory and provides identity to the city and its residents.

The Latin American cities, their cultural heritage, and their historically built city centers, can be seen as changing urban forms, as a result of processes and policies. As such, the symposium addresses the following questions: Which cultural dialogues can be identified in the historic centers of the contemporary architecture of the city? Which processes are under way in city centers that result in changes for their architecture and for cultural urban life? Which public policies have been undertaken to ensure the vitality of the centers in different cities? This proposal for a symposium elects the city as a privileged place for constructing multicultural identities in Latin America, continuing the debate undertaken at the symposia "The Architecture of the City in America. Contemporary dialogues between local and global " - 51st ICA in Santiago, Chile, 2003 -, "The city in the Americas: Perspectives of the urban form for the XXI century" - 52th ICA in Seville, Spain, 2006-, and “The architecture of the city in the Americas: Changes and continuities in the centrality and the structure of contemporary urban form” - 53th ICA in Mexico City, 2009.
