4432 - El humor filosófico de Macedonio Fernández (The Philosophical Humor of Macedonio Fernández)

Among the texts written (despite the myth of his being a genius of essential orality, spread by Borges) by the Argentinean author, both those published during his lifetime on his own initiative and those that appeared only posthumously, I should like to discuss mainly four examples - under the prism contained in the title of my presentation.

According to my opinion, each of the texts chosen proposes a specific version of “reality” (the speech mark here is introduced on purpose), so that we as readers get as many different aesthetic / philosophical positions – positions that are not necessarily those of fluctuating paradigms of changing world views. In order to clarify the (possible) convictions of Fernández I intend to sound the core structures on which the following among his texts rely:

1. Papeles de Recienvenido y Continuación de la Nada will be interpreted as a fragmentary parody of autobiographical writing and the (re-) / (de-) construction of a public and/or private personality (or rather: the dissolution of this subject)

2. Adriana Buenos Aires will be tackled as MF’s onslaught number one on narratology and the idea of the realistic-romantic-psychological novel.

3. Museo de la Novela de la Eterna will be analyzed as his onslaught number two on storytelling, this time in the guise of a deconstruction of the narrative pattern as a whole – a radicalization of Adriana as well as a political satire (the text itself in some parts functions as a kind of topographical object: the territory of anarchy)

And finally,

4. No todo es vigilia la de los ojos abiertos will be commented on as a tongue-in-cheek attack on philosophical Idealism and on Western thinking in general) – partly in connection with poetical statements top the effect of denying the existence of individuality.

The samples chosen should also make clear that fundamental communicative estrangement as well as questions of national culture and personal identity are wittily orchestrated as the main concerns of the spiritual father of Borges.
